In 1987, American Health Systems introduced the first pressure relieving mattress with Interface Surface Technology (IST™), for the prevention and treatment of Stage 1 and 2 Decubitus Ulcers. The IST™ design was also used to create a true pressure relieving mattress overlay and complete line of wheelchair cushions appropriate for low to high-risk patients.

ULTRA•FORM IST™ relieves pressure and eliminates shearing forces, which many studies have shown to be a major factor in early stage skin breakdown. The IST™ surface utilizes hundreds of polymer cells that conform to the shape of the individual patient, and self-adjust with position changes. Individual therapeutic cells distribute weight, reducing pressure while air channels surrounding each cell keep the surface cooler, avoiding moisture/heat build-up.
